A Sad Day...

I have found out that Uncle Bruce has passed away.
(Pictured, myself, Uncle Bruce, Carey)

Who is Uncle Bruce B.D.?

Uncle Bruce, is Carey's uncle. He groomed Carey for barbecue. He was a good man, a decent soul, a huge heart, a man of many stories, a good man...

It saddens me to hear this news. I loved Uncle Bruce, he was a man of passion and humor and grace and just down to earth...human.

He was always at Memphis in May to cheer us on. To give advice and just there to be with us. He loved barbecue.

From the first time I shook his hand, he won my heart. He always sat at the back of the booth to watch us work and tell his stories and give his opinion or advice.

He helped me fix my box for the Hot Wings competition and we took 7th place out of 96 entries.

He will be sadly missed...by one and all.

God be with you Uncle Bruce.
Rest your oars sailor, you're home...

Weekend Report...

I can't decide what kind of smoker I want to buy, but I ran across this and thought what a great idea. Wonder how many beers was involved in that design concept...

It's almost time to go back to work...yeah...can't wait...for joy for joy...yes...I'm excited...woo-hoo...

What's on for today B.D.?

I'll get the Christmas tree out of the attic and get that fixed up.
Julie & Robyn love to decorate...I could care less.

Now, the tree and the inside of the house is fine, but I ain't going overboard with all these fancy lights outside and the nick knacks and hubbub of trying to create dust bunny's in my wallet by trying to keep up with the upper echelons of society...Sorry about your luck, ain't going to happen.

I'm the one who has to put it out...and then, I'm the one who has to take it down... in the dead of winter. No thank you...

The day after...

Someone said...

B.D. why did you not give thanks yesterday for Thanksgiving?

Well...

Like I said, we don't do Turkey, as this seems to be the bird of choice on this day.

But...

I do give thanks, for many reasons besides Thanksgiving.

I give thanks for...

Meeting Julie and being fortunate enough to become her husband.
For us having Robyn.
For us acquiring our black bear, Sweetie.
For becoming a part of a loving family.
For God, loving me for who I am.
For having my beer, always cold.
For my girls.
For being able to learn new things.
For my health.
For where I am today and where I shall go tomorrow.
For life and my time on this earth.

And...

For being happy...for once in my life.

These are things I give thanks for. Thanksgiving, is just a day.

I give thanks 24/7 for these things...

Who needs Turkey?

This & That...

Well...I grilled some chicken and grilled some pork chops this weekend.

The weather is changing for the worst this week, so I may not be grilling much in the next few days.

As far as Thanksgiving goes, that day belongs to my Mother-in-Law, she shines this day and it's not about Turkey. As long as I have been married to Julie, we always have chicken at Mom's house on Thanksgiving.

This is fine with me...

Chicken has become a main staple in this household...wonder why.

I have never been a big fan of Turkey, only with luncheon meat as the Sandwich God goes...

I would like to deep fry a Turkey some day, but that might not happen for awhile.

I just don't care that much about Turkey...Does that make me UN-American?

No...

I just don't care about that big beast. Maybe a smoked Turkey would change my mind.

That might work...I'll look into that.

Simply Thursday...

This is the logo and team name I came up with for the team I'm putting together to do KCBS events next year. Is that not cool or what...

The artwork was done by Hot Spot Graphics, thanks to Patrick Carlson for that design and hard work. Here is the link to his web page.
http://www.hotspotgraphics.com/

I have retired from Peg Leg Porker and I'm starting my own team. I wish these guys all the luck in the world and I hope they do fine in Memphis in May without me.

But, it's time for me to move on...

My vision is to win, no politics involved and to do the best that I can. I believe I'll do better on my own with no BS involved. If I'm going to be a work mule and my opinion is overruled by politics, then I'll just go my own way and do my thing.

It may take me a few years, but I'll survive...and I will win.

And the Chicken said...

Well...I love it when great minds think alike. I was going to grill some chicken tonight, but when I called my lovely wife on the way home from work, she had a whole chicken in the crock pot cooking and had the menu already planned out.

Well...far be it from me to say, "Sorry about your luck, I was going to grill." She beat me to the cook off, but that's fine, my lovely likes to commandeer the kitchen every once in a while.

Dang women...you can never read their minds.

But...

Great minds do think alike and we are having chicken.

So...

Simply This & That...

Someone asked me, how come I don't post recipes here anymore.

All of the recipes I have posted over the years are now on,

Macdaddy's Grill Recipes Page

I decided to put everything on one page, so it would be more convenient for all to see. So, check it out often as I now post all recipes on the Recipes Page.

I just thought it would be nice to have all of these great recipes in one place.

So...there you go.

Well... we're back.

It was a fun trip and some of our folks did really great.

One of our guys (Jim) shot a 300, "Congrats" to him, anytime anybody shoots a 300 that is something special. Some of my girls did good, Vicky shot well, Tracy did good and another one of our guys almost had a 300 (Greg) shot a 278.

Cliffe, "Mister Machine", always does good.

Me...I had a few good games, (my hand started brothering me), Julie was off of her game, Betty...well she's just Betty. Mike did good, but we all could have done better, but that's just part of the game, you're on...or you struggle.

But being with the company and trying to do our best is what it's all about. We'll survive and come back to fight another day...

And next time might be worse...or it might be our day.

You never know...

Simply Thursday...

Well...the weather has calmed down somewhat, so have my sinuses, this is welcome news to me and my nose...

We had a pizza night tonight, not bad, but no cigar. It's not the grill, but it will suffice until I feel like cooking again...

The Grill will be closed this weekend as we are about to depart out of town on a trip with some of my girls to the outer world of bowling...

Say what?

We're going out of town to a bowling tournament.

So...

The Weekend Report will be posted upon our return.

Wish us luck and drink one for me...

This & That...

OK...Robyn didn't feel good last week, Julie doesn't feel good this week (can't blame it on me) and now, I'm having the sinus attack from hell...go figure.

We're suppose to go out of town this coming weekend to a bowling tournament and we may not be up to snuff on that deal and I don't think all the beer in the world will help either one of us right now. Again...go figure.

Mine, is from the weather changing so much...as far as the other two, I don't have a clue. I just know right now, I'm out numbered in the hormone department.

Two against one, is not a pretty sight in this house.

I'm screwed...(and not in the good way...)

Weekend Report (part II)

Well...I did the slabs of ribs and made a sauce, I thought the sauce was good, Julie didn't like it. She thought it was bland. I thought it was close to the pantry sauce I make, but it could use a little work.

Maybe, if I made it a day ahead of time and let the flavors mix more, it would be better.

I think this has potential to be a good sauce. I didn't apply it to the ribs, just served it on the side, but I think it would cook out good and complement the rub. Julie, has reservations about it, but she can't put her finger on it as to what's missing.

I'll figure it out, in another test run or two. But, for the first test run, I'm almost there, just a few tweaks here and there and I'll have it...

Weekend Report...

I grilled some leg quarters and breasts last night, I usually don't do breast.

Let me rephrase that...

I usually don't do chicken split breast.

But... I thought it might be a change for me, I marinaded them in Newman's Family Italian dressing for a little over an hour and they were very moist and I hit a good temperature, so they were done just right.

Tonight, I will do some thighs and for Sunday, I have two big slabs of ribs to smoke. I would do them today, but I don't have enough rub made, so I'll make some up today and I'll fix them tomorrow.

I may also try to make the sauce recipe I have floating around in my head, I know what I want...I just haven't done it yet.

(I need to get it done so I'll have it down pat when I start doing the KCBS competitions next year. I have the team name picked out, now I just have to assemble the team I want and get my equipment ordered and here by spring.)

So tomorrow... we will eat ribs, drink beer and watch the big game (Colts & New England)

Can you smell the smoke already?

Enjoy your day!!!

Simply Thursday...

Well... I hope you had a great Halloween.

We took Robyn to the old 'hood we use to live in because they always blow it out... big time.

When we lived there, we had over 80 kids come by the house, I think most of Hendersonville came to that neighborhood because almost all of the houses around the block went all out and they loved the kids coming by.

So, we go back every year to carry on the tradition. It's a great time for all, young and old, and you hit the mother load when it comes to candy...

Nothing like a sugar rush...

Now... if they would only come up with a holiday where everybody handed out cold beer.

I'm there...
